Sea Erosion Intensifies in Buchanan City

BUCHANAN, Jan 29 (LINA) - Grand Bassa County has been badly hit by erosion caused by the Atlantic Ocean, destroying many buildings along the coast.

Disclosing this to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) Tuesday, Grand Bassa County Representative Gabriel Smith said Big Fanti Town and Atlantic Street have been badly affected by the sea erosion

According to him, an initial amount of US$1.5 million has been made available by the UN Development Program and the government, to start the project to contain the sea erosion, but said the amount is just too small for the entire project.

He put the cost of combating the sea erosion at about US$25 million.

Representative Smith said if nothing is done now, the destruction would extend to Upper Buchanan and other parts of the coastline and cause more destruction to the country’s second largest port City.

The project to contain the erosion commenced last year.

Representative Smith said that the present Port of Buchanan was built at the time of “political maneuvering” but was actually meant to be built in Newcess, also in Grand Bassa County.

He is appealing to government to rescue the port of Buchanan by constructing a Coastal Defense that will block the sea from destroying additional parts of the city, noting that the Port of Buchanan a major economic hub for the county and national government.
