MONROVIA, November 7(LINA) -The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has started chlorinating an estimated 2,500 hand pumps and wells in Montserrado County under the ‘Annual Nationwide Mass Chlorination Exercise’.

During a program marking the launch of the exercise Thursday, the ministry did a symbolic chlorination of one hand pump in the Compound of Garworld Township

Performing the ceremony, the Manager of the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) for Ebola at the Ministry, Amos Gborie, said the exercise is intended to disinfect hand pumps and wells to reduce the threat of diarrhea and other water-borne diseases.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Gborie said the exercise in Montserrado will last for 10 days with 100 persons assigned to perform the task in concert with community residents.

Phase Two of the exercise will target rural Liberia, he said.

Gborie disclosed that the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is sponsoring the Nationwide Mass Chlorination Exercise.
