LMDC Official Warns ‘Ebola is Serious’
By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, October 14 (LINA) - The Research Director of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) has stressed that the issue of Ebola “is still serious” in Liberia, while some Liberians are still denying the existence of the disease in the country.

Dr. Moses Pewu said the fight against Ebola should claim the attention of every Liberian to ensure that “the epidemic is eradicated from the country as soon as possible.”
Dr. Pewu, who made the disclosure Monday in an interview with journalists at the LMDC head office in the Monrovia suburb of Sinkor, said the death rate from Ebola is still on the increase in the sub-region, with Liberia having half of the more than 4.000 recorded deaths.

He observed that all the deaths might not be due to Ebola, noting that it is unfortunate that the health sector does not have the equipment to easily differentiate Ebola deaths from those of other diseases.

He said has made the death rate in Liberia higher than in Guinea and Sierra Leone.

He cautioned health workers to be humanitarians and save lives despite the risk associated with their work, while urging policy makers to ensure that health workers are compensated for the risk they are taking to save the lives of other Liberians.

Dr. Pewu pointed out that the LMDC is working to ensure that health workers, health institutions and patients adhere to the ethics of the medical profession which is crucial to saving humanity.
