Senator Jah Stresses Women’s Development Role

KAKATA, Jan 26 (LINA) - Margibi County Senior Senator Clarice Alpha David- Jah says the strength and potential of any nation incorporates the contributions of its women to growth and development.
She observed that no nation can thrive without the total involvement of women, noting that women are pillars upon which the nation is built.
According to the Liberia News Agency, Senator Jah made the statement over the weekend in Kakata when she served as guest speaker at the launch of the Dunelei Village Savings and Loan Apex Organization.
She called on members of the organization to remain committed and focused on the development of the membership to better their lives and communities.
Senator Jah donated L$50,000 as her initial contribution to the organization.
Earlier, the president of the association, John Yarkpuo said it was first developed and piloted by CARE International in Niger in 1991, targeting poor rural women.
He said in Liberia, CARE International started the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) in 2009 and has formed about 400 groups with over 12,000 beneficiaries.
Mr. Yarkpuo said in collaboration with the Dutch Consortium for Rehabilitation (DCR), a project funded by the Dutch government, CARE Liberia in concert with ZOA and Save the Children, has founded over 200 VSLAs in Bong, Montserrado and Margibi counties.
He said assessment currently shows very high impact in Margibi County.
At present the financial assets of the organization is about US$40 million, he said.
