Local CSO Threatens ArcelorMittal Operations

By Wellington Patrick, Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, Jan 26 (LINA) - A local civil society organization in Nimba County has threatened to obstruct operations of the mining giant ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML), if the pavement of the Ganta-Yekepa road continues to experience delays.

The ultimatum comes in the wake of information released by ArcelorMittal and confirmed by the resident Engineer of Nimba that the company has contributed US$40 million to the government to pave the Ganta -Yekepa highway.

Dyrus Weh and Lawrence Tokpah, executive members of the Ears for the Masses, told journalists at the weekend that the group was demanding that the government and AML begin pavement of the road within one month.

The group threatened to unleash a series of actions against ArcelorMittal that could slow down its operations in Nimba, expressing fear that the $40m may disappear, if it is not used on time.

The organization added that it would continue to inform the citizens, government, and the company about its ultimatum up to the expiry date.

It recalled that during the negotiation of the current Mineral Development Agreement between the government and AML, the company agreed to pave the road outside of the Agreement as a demonstration of its desire to help in the reconstruction and development of Liberia.
