Pres. Sirleaf Orders Nimba Officials Probed

By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe

MONROVIA, October 8 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has instructed the Ministry of Internal Affairs to investigate the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Nimba County respectively  and submit a report to her by Wednesday, October 8, 2014.

President Sirleaf’s directive is in response to a communication dated September 23, 2014 signed by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives, Mildred Sayon, conveying the decision of Plenary that it can no longer work with the two officials.

In a letter to House Speaker J. Alexander Tyler dated September 26, 2014, and read in Session Tuesday, the President emphasized that she attaches importance to the investigation because it raises grave issues, some of which may involve misuse of public resources and infraction of the financial and procurement laws of Liberia, the Liberia News Agency reports.

It can be recalled that recently, the House of Representatives in a no confidence vote against the Nimba officials, County Superintendent Fong Zuagele and Assistant Superintendent Teko Yorley complained of disrespect filed against them by the Nimba county Legislative Caucus.

The Liberian leader pointed out that whatever the results of the investigation, appropriate action will be taken to ensure due respect to the Legislature as she personally does.

“As I broached to you a few days ago, we are considering a return to the practice of the past which appoints Superintendents of counties solely on the basis of their competence, experience and good record of behavior without reference to their County of origin,” the President informed the Speaker.

According to her, this policy will minimize the conflicts that exist in several counties due to differences in public financial management and political ambition.
