Senate Confirms Amara Konneh As Finance Minister
By Winnie Dixon

MONROVIA, October 2 (LINA) - The Liberian Senate has confirmed Mr. Amara M. Konneh as Minister of Finance and Development Planning.

His confirmation was announced by the Secretary of the Senate, minutes after Pro-Tempore Gbehzongar Findley ruled on a motion of reconsideration filed by Maryland County Senator Dan Morias.

On September 23, after a prolonged executive meeting, Morias proffered a motion for reconsideration into the confirmations of Minister-designate Konneh and his team as well as nominees of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).

According to Findley, his decision to rule against the motion was based on rule 34(1) of the body that states that when a motion of reconsideration is announced, the mover should provide information on the motion the same day.

Speaking during regular session on Thursday, Findley said documentation provided by the senate secretariat, made it clear that Morias’ motion was not restated and communicated to the secretariat, thus making it invalid.

On July 15, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf submitted to the Senate for confirmation the name of Mr. Amara Konneh as Minister-designate of Finance and Development Planning.

Also confirmed Thursday was Mrs. Elfreda Tamba Stewart as Commissioner General of the LRA.

Her name was submitted to the Senate in March 2014 President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for confirmation.
