Ebola Kills 17 In Grand Kru County, Lawmaker Discloses
By H. Vasco Wiagbe

MONROVIA, September 25 (LINA) - Grand Kru County Representative Numene Bartekwa has disclosed that 17 persons have died from the Ebola virus in the county, while 28 others are seriously sick.

Bartekwa said the deaths occurred in the Porluken Community in Forkpo District, and an area where people from Monrovia and other counties usually converge to carry out mining activities, according to the Liberia News Agency (LINA).

Addressing Legislative reporters at the Capitol Building Thursday, the Grand Kru Representative indicated that people are getting sick on a daily basis in the district, describing the place as an epicenter of Ebola.

Bartekwa also lamented that it is difficult to deliver food items and medicines to the Ebola-affected area because roads leading there are impassable, thereby hampering efforts to tackle the disease.

He has, meanwhile, appealed to the Liberian Government, United Nations Mission In Liberia (UNMIL), Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the World Food Program (WFP) to lift food and medicines to the Porluken Community to save lives.

Bartekwa expressed fear that if nothing is done urgently to contain the situation, the virus would claim more lives in the area and rapidly spread to other parts of Grand Kru County.
