Minister Brown Rubbishes Media Report On Gov’t PR

By Prince Nagbe

MONROVIA, Jan 23 (LINA) - Information Minister Lewis Brown has termed as “totally untrue and a misrepresentation of the fact” a recent publication alleging the Government spent millions of dollars on public relations overseas.

Speaking Thursday at the regular Information Ministry press briefing, Brown said the Government has filed a formal complaint to the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) for “ethical breach of the journalism profession” by the In Profile Daily Newspaper, publisher of the article.

The MICAT boss said the Government anticipates that the PUL leadership will conduct a hearing into its complaint as soon as possible and not treat it trivially.

Minister Brown said the government has always been interested in free speech and freedom of the press as evidenced by the signing of the Table Mountain Declaration, a document which supports free speech and freedom of the Press.

He hoped this act by government will be upheld by members of the press through their reportage.

Brown warned that the Government will not regret taking legal action against the In-Profile newspaper if the leadership of the PUL does not look into the matter in a timely and professional way.

He then called on media institutions to get to the relevant government ministries and agencies to ascertain the facts before giving information to the public.
