34 New Ebola Cases Reported In Bong

By Ballah Kollie, LINA Bong County Correspondent

SUAKOKO, September 24 (LINA) – The Bong County Health Team (CHT) has disclosed that it recorded the highest number of new Ebola cases over the weekend in the county.

Addressing the regular County Ebola Response Task Force meeting Monday, the Administrator of the CHT, Fatormah Jusu, said the 34 new suspected Ebola cases is the highest number recorded for a single weekend since the outbreak of the virus in the county in mid-July.

He said 27 of the 34 new cases are suspected, while the remaining seven are probable or confirmed cases.

Jusu informed participants at a briefing attended by the Liberia News Agency Bong County correspondent of a fresh outbreak of the virus in Mawah, a town situated behind Handii Town along the St. Paul River in Fuamah District, Bong County.

He said of the nine cases reported from Mawah during the weekend, two persons have already died of the virus, while many of the sick fled into the bushes when an ambulance arrived in the town on Monday morning to take them to the Bong County Ebola Treatment Unit in Suakoko District.

Meanwhile, following a visit of the CHT and a team from the County Task Force headed by Bong County Superintendent Selena Polson Mappy, it was revealed that at least eight persons who had come in contact with a boy infected with the virus have died, while scores of contacts are said to have been confirmed with the disease.

At a town hall meeting with citizens of Mawah Town Monday, both the County Health Officer Dr. Samson K. Arzoquoi and Superintendent Mappy expressed sympathy to the townspeople for the death of their relatives, but pleaded with residents to join them in the fight against the spread of the disease.

“To prevent one more person from dying means that you will have to strictly adhere to the measures put in place by the health ministry,” they noted.

They announced the quarantine of several homes and that each home will be given a monthly supply of food items to enable them sustain themselves while undergoing the 21 days observation.

In a related development, the county health team has reported the death of 15 persons, with four of those deaths coming from the new Ebola Treatment Unit in Suakoko, Bong County.

According to the CHT report, of the 14 persons held at the unit since its opening on Monday, September 15, four of those confirmed with the virus have died, while two tested negative.

Eight others are currently being treated by International Medical Corps, operator of the center.

The regular health team briefing brought together representatives of the World Health Organization, UNICEF, WFP and heads of committees on the health team’s Ebola Response Task Force as well as local and International partners.
