President Sirleaf Hailed for Support to Sports

MONROVIA, Jan 22 (LINA)-The Assistant Minister for Sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, V. Murvee Gray, has praised the Chief Patron of Sports, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and the Government of Liberia for the level of support given to sports in the country particularly, the just-ended national county sports meet.
Minister Gray said the National County Sports Meet met its intended purpose of re-unifying and reconciling the Liberian people, because during the matches no confusion erupted between any of the participating counties.
He, however, cited overcrowding of the stadium as a major challenge that has tainted the county meet every year.
Assistant Minister Gray regretted that even though the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports complex was constructed for 35,000 spectators, the number of tickets printed usually increases to more than 50,000, resulting to overcrowding of the stadium.
He also named budgetary constraints as one of the challenges confronting the ministry of youth and sports, and appealed to the National Legislature to increase the ministry’s budget to enable it overcome those obstacles.
According to him, other challenges include the adoption of rules and regulations of the game and the preparation of the fixture to separate close-up counties and place them into zones.
Minister Gray has meanwhile lauded all participating teams, employees of the ministry and the general public for their cooperation during the2013/2014 County meet.
