Nimba Religious Leaders Commit To Ebola Fight
By Wellington Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, September 11 (LINA) -Religious leaders in Nimba County have reaffirmed their commitment to help the government fight the Ebola virus that has claimed the lives of over 30 residents of the county.

The Head of the Mosques in Nimba, Alhaji Seahway, disclosed that Muslims in Nimba County have suspended major religious and cultural practices as part of measures to contain further spread of the virus.

He said while Muslims pray for God’s intervention in the Ebola outbreak, it is equally necessary to abstain from practices that help to spread the disease.

For his part, the chairman of the Christian community of Nimba, Rev. John Baryogar cautioned pastors to refrain from laying hands on sick people because this has the propensity to spread the Ebola virus.

Referencing the Holy Bible, Rev. Baryogar said Jesus healed people without touching them, and encouraged faith healers to avoid laying hands on sick people as a measure to contain the deadly Ebola.

The religious leaders made the statements earlier this week when Equip Liberia in collaboration with the Ganta Christian Community held a day-long Ebola awareness worship involving the mosques and 10 local churches in Sanniquellie.

The clergymen said those trained will be empowered to train their local congregations in rural parts of the county.
