CEO Wants Traditional Leaders Observe Academic Sessions

GBARNGA, Jan 21 (LINA) - Bong County Education Officer Madam Beatrice Bonner is appealing to traditional leaders in the county to observe the academic calendar in carrying out Poro and Sande initiations.
The call by Madam Bonner is informed by the fact that nearly 75 percent of schools in the county are often closed during Poro and Sande society sessions.
She told the Liberia News Agency that she has high respect and regard for and cherishes the cultural practices of which she is a graduate, but noted that if a bright future must be ensured for the county, it must prioritize education over tradition.
Madam Bonner is, meanwhile, calling for the intervention of the county’s lawmakers and all well-meaning citizens to help arrest the situation by holding discussions with traditional leaders on the observance of the school calendar before launching the Poro and Sande activities.
“Though I am a graduate of this traditional practice, we want you to please observe our school schedule as it relates to our traditional culture,” she concluded.
