WCL donates to Ebola victims; SDF reaches US$ 9.5m

MONROVIA, September 10 (LINA) - Western Cluster Limited (WCL) has donated 200 bags of rice and assorted food items to the National Taskforce on Ebola intended for patients currently being treated at various Ebola Treatment Centers.

Presenting the items, a senior staff of the company, Ansu Konneh, said Western Cluster along with parent companies Vedanta and Sesa Sterlite are “deeply concerned” about the current health crisis in the country and the donation was their way of identifying with the people of Liberia during these challenging moments.

“WCL, Vedanta, Sesa Sterlite are with you and remain committed to Liberia and we pray that this challenging time will soon come to pass,” said Mr Konneh, according to a release from WCL.

Receiving the donation, the National Coordinator of the National Task Force on Ebola, Mr. James Dorbor Jallah praised the company for the donation and described it as “a clear demonstration of solidarity with the people of Liberia”

In another development, WCL Limited has remitted US$2.5 million in the Liberian Government’s coffers as Annual Social Contributions covering the period August 2014 to August 2015, in fulfilment of obligations under its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) signed with the Liberian Government in 2011.

This latest payment brings to US$9.5 million which WCL has paid since 2011 as social contributions for community development projects for Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount and Montserrado Counties - the four counties which are direct beneficiaries of the company’s annual Social Development Funds (SDF).

Moreover, WCL has also remitted US$100,000 as Scientific Research Fund intended for the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy and US$40,000 in support of the Geology and Mining Engineering Departments of the University of Liberia for the period 2014/2015.

From 2011-2013, the company also remitted US$400,000 to the Liberian Government coffers as General Educational Funds meant for scholarships students from the four counties to study Geology and Mining Engineering at the University of Liberia and other recognized universities.

The MDA mandates the company to pay the contributions into the Government of Liberia’s Revenue Account which are later disbursed among the various beneficiary counties and institutions
