WHO Assures Strong Partnership in Liberia’s Ebola Fight

MONROVIA, September 5 (LINA) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has reiterated its commitment to partner with Liberia in its battle to rid the country of the Ebola disease.

Addressing a news conference held at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia Thursday, WHO Country Representative to Liberia, Peter Gratt, assured that Liberia will continue to receive technical assistance from the WHO to strengthen the country in its fight against the deadly disease.

He said WHO will remain a full representative of Liberia’s coordination mechanism instituted to eradicate the Ebola virus, saying, “You are not alone in the fight. Liberia can be assured that WHO will continue to stand with you in this struggle.”

According to Gratt, the WHO has worked closely with health authorities in the country and has completed the training of over 100 Liberians who are expected to provide services at the Island Clinic facility which is expected to reopen soon.

“I was extremely impressed recently to see hundreds of Liberians coming forward for training and to be deployed in the new facility that will be open very soon,” Gratt said.

He pointed out that the global health body is trying to get as soon as possible to a position where the general public will be advised on methods of presenting proper accounts in tracing patients and other Ebola-related strategies necessary to strengthen the fight.  

Meanwhile, Gratt has called on the Liberian media to provide accurate information to the public.

He also called on people suspected of the virus to report quickly to health facilities so that they can stand a chance of surviving the disease.

Mr. Gratt stressed that undergoing early treatment prevents the spread of the disease as patients will be prevented from coming into contact with members of their family.
