Four Mining Firms Shut, 500 Workers Redundant
By Emmanuel Mondaye, LINA Gbarpolu County Correspondent

BOPOLU, September 4 (LINA) - Four mining companies operating in Gbarpolu County have suspended operations, leaving about 500 workers jobless.

According to Gbarpolu County Labor Commissioner Alfred Too, Belle Resource and Earth Source in Koninga District, Treco in Kongba District and Bao Chico, which operates in Bopolu District, suspended operations Monday to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus in their concession areas.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency Wednesday in Gbarpolu County, Mr. Too said the decision by the companies to temporally shut down was sanctioned by the Liberian Government, leaving only skeleton staff to man the companies’ facilities.

Too said with the exception of Bao Chico, the managements of Treco, Belle Source and Earth Source gave their workers three months’ severance pay to sustain them during the layoff period, adding that plans are underway for Bao Chico to meet its obligation to the workers.

He noted that workers of all the companies will be called back to work when these firms resume normal operations as soon as the Ebola outbreak is contained in the country.
