Lawyer Denies Hans, Madea Re-Arrest; Seeks Compensation

By Comfort Johnson

MONROVIA, September 3 (LINA) – Counselor Frank Musah Dean, lead lawyer for Hans and Madea Williams, is calling on government to “do the honorable thing” and award some compensation to the couple for six years of ‘unlawful incarceration.’

The couple were arrested in 2008 and charged with murder in connection with the death of 13-yr-old Angel Togbah, who was found hanging in one of the bathrooms of their Sinkor Old Road residence on November 7, 2007.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency at his office Monday, Dean said when people are aggrieved, what they need to do is to take their case to the Claims Court but noted that since the National Legislature has not enacted a law establishing this court.

Cllr. Dean said in the absence of the Claims Court, the only option is to take the case to a regional court, either the ECOWAS or African Union Court.

He said he sent a caveat to the government to award some compensation to the couple for their wrongful detention for the period of six years a week after the pair was freed from the Monrovia Central Prison.

“Government needs to take step to remedy the wrong that has been done to these people by giving them some compensation, because they were without work for six years, and their reputation ruined while in detention,” he pointed out.

When quizzed as to how much the couple deserved as compensation, Dean answered: “I don’t know”, adding, that the issue of compensation is left with the defendants themselves to decide.

Meanwhile,Dean has denied a report on the social media that Hans and Madea had been re-arrested on charges of rape, adding that the information is “untrue and misleading.”
