MONROVIA, August 28(LINA) -Maryland County Representative Bhofal Chambers has called for the reintroduction of public health units in all schools in the country.
He noted that such units will be responsible to provide appropriate and regular health services and education on various diseases and methods of prevention.
The lawmaker’s call was contained in a communication dated August 27, 2014, and addressed to Speaker J. Alexander Tyler, according to the Liberia News Agency.
“I write purposely to request this August Body, in view of the present circumstances as regards the unprecedented health crisis in our country, to coordinate with the Executive, so as to reintroduce into our national educational architecture a public health unit in all schools as was done in the
past,” Chambers said in his letter.
He noted that if such health measure is put in place, it will certainly go a long way in providing the necessary safeguards to the student population in preventing most, if not all, virulent diseases and thus avoid the recurrence of the prevailing health situation in the country.
After the letter was read in plenary Thursday, it was turned over to the House Committees on Health and Education with instruction to liaise with the Ministries of Education and Health and Social Welfare to establish whether such units do not exist in the curriculum of the country.
The two committees have been mandated to report in two weeks.
