USAID Gives $5m More To West Africa Ebola Response

MONROVIA, August 28 (LINA) -The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced that it is providing an additional US$5 million to help combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The latest amount brings USAID’s commitment towards the Ebola response to nearly US$19.6 million since the outbreak was first reported in March 2014.

Jeremy Konyndyk, Director of the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance, announced the additional funding Wednesday at a press conference held at the Ministry of Information.

The press conference marked the climax of the three -day visit of Konydyk and Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the US. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to Liberia.

Konyndyk and Dr. Frieden arrived in Monrovia on August 24 to assess the impact of the Ebola outbreak first-hand and review response activities as well as discuss preventive and treatment strategies with Liberian officials.

“It will take a coordinated effort by the entire international community to contain the spread of the Ebola epidemic” Konydyk pointed out.

He said the U.S. government is working closely with WHO, the governments of affected countries and other partners to identify the greatest needs and deploy critical resources to affected areas.

Konyndyk also said that the additional fund will be used to provide health equipment and emergency supplies, train and support health care workers on infection control and case management ,support public outreach campaign and help build the capacity of the local health care and emergency response system.

The announcement comes just days after USAID airlifted more than 16 tons of medical supplies and emergency equipment to Liberia including 10,000 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE), water treatment systems, water tanks capable of storing 10,000 liters each and 100 rolls of plastic sheeting to construct Ebola treatment units.
