NGO Wants Ebola Charity Fund In Nimba

By: Wellington Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, August 26 (LINA) -The Nimba NGO Network has called on the County Taskforce on Ebola to establish a charity fund drive to enable the county raise more funding to combat the Ebola virus.

The Executive Officer of the Agriculture Relief Services, Patrick Lah, speaking on behalf of the Network, said the NGO and residents of Nimba, local government and partners, County Legislative Caucus and Nimba citizens in the Diaspora could jointly raise more money to combat the virus.

Recently, the Chairman of the Nimba Legislative Caucus, Senator Thomas Grupee, disclosed that the caucus has reached a decision to apportion US$100,000 from the Nimba County Social Development Fund to help the county contain the Ebola virus.

The Network in a statement issued at the weekend said it wants the County Council to approve the money during its official sitting, and not the Caucus.

It, however, noted that fundraising could be underway while awaiting the sitting of the County Council which approves withdrawals from the Social Development Fund.

The NGO Network stressed the need to establish an Ebola Testing and Treatment Center in every Ebola-stricken county in Liberia.

It also called attention to the vulnerability of health workers and lack of food supply to Ebola patients in the county as issues hampering an effective fight against the deadly virus.

The Network wants personal protection equipment donated by government and partners to Nimba County for every Health District.

They pointed out that that Sanniquellie, the provincial capital, and Ganta, the commercial city, are not the only Ebola-affected communities of Nimba requiring more attention in the Ebola fight.

The Nimba NGO Network, however, expressed appreciation to the County Health Team and the Nimba Ebola Task Force for the level of work done so far.
