Grand Bassa Wins 2014 National County Meet Soccer

MONROVIA, Jan 20 (LINA) - Grand Bassa County has captured the 2014 National County Meet trophy after defeating Nimba County 2-1 in the finals of the tournament.

The final was played Sunday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in the suburb of Paynesville before a capacity crowd of more than 45,000 spectators.

Grand Bassa County also won the basketball trophy after defeating Bong County 75 to 55, while Bong County won the Kick Ball trophy, walking over Sinoe County in the grand final of the kick-ball tournament.

Nimba County won the Volley Ball trophy, defeating defending champion Bomi County.

Meanwhile, Liberia’s soccer legend Ambassador George Weah, who presented the trophies to the winning teams, has congratulated participating teams for their brilliant performances, saying that players for the country’s national team could be drawn from this year’s county meet.

He also lauded the organizers of the national sports meet, noting that this year’s county meet featured several good players.

Also speaking upon receiving the trophy, Grand Bassa County Superintendent Mrs. Etweda Cooper thanked the players and officials of the county, and promised to use portion of the County Development Fund (CDF) to improve the county’s sporting facilities and activities.

For his part, Senator Milton Gbehzongar Findley renewed his commitment to invest in sports in the county.

He said the victory of Grand Bassa County is a victory for all Bassa citizens, whether resident in the county or not.

This is the first time Grand Bassa County is winning the National Sports Meet trophy in 24 years. The year’s tournament was held under the theme: “Sports to celebrate 10 years of Peace”.
