NTAL Urges End To UL Crisis

MONROVIA, Jan. 18 (LINA) -The National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL) has described as “worrisome” the prolonged closure of the University of Liberia (UL).

NTAL President, Ellen Fartu Varfley, said the continued closure of the UL has the propensity to delay academic activities of students, especially those that are expected to graduate in December this year.

In a statement issued Saturday, Varfley also noted that the situation could deny young people desirous of enrolling at the institution the opportunity to do so, thereby thwarting efforts to reduce the high illiteracy rate in the country.

She has, therefore, called on the UL Administration, Board of Trustees, Faculty Association and the UL Students Union (ULSU) to amicably resolve the ongoing crisis at the institution as soon as possible, through dialogue.

The UL has been closed since November 2013 over demands by the UL Faculty Association and ULSU for the resignation of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Wede Brownell, on grounds that she is not competent for the job and lacks manner of approach to individuals.

President Varfley said although the UL Faculty Association and students might have legitimate claims, it was prudent that they and the UL Administration find a common ground to immediately resolve the matter.
