Senators Want Int’l Community Take Over Ebola Taskforce

By H. Vasco Wiagbe

MONROVIA, August 19 (LINA) - Several members of the Liberian Senate have recommended that the international community takes over the National Task Force on Ebola to ensure success in the fight against the killer disease.

Senators Geraldine Doe-Sheriff, Nyonblee Lawrence and Mobutu Nyenpan, among others, noted that Liberia lacks the capacity and expertise to effectively manage the Ebola virus that has overwhelmed the government.

According to the Liberia News Agency (LINA), the Senators made the recommendation in separate statements Tuesday after the reading of a communication from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, dated August 12, informing them about the Organizational Structure being finalized to guide the efforts of the Task Force on Ebola.

They believe that when the international community takes over the Task Force, Liberia will be able to attract more overseas support, and there will be no delay in responding to Ebola-related cases from various communities.

The Senators said the Task Force will acquire logistics and train health workers and others on how to combat the disease.

They have also called for the reopening of all hospitals and health centers shut down due to the Ebola virus outbreak to reduce the death rate in Liberia from curable illnesses.

The Senators pointed out that most of the people die from other sicknesses other than the Ebola virus, attributing the situation to the continuous closure to health facilities that are supposed to cater to them.
