NEC Dismisses Dual Citizen Protest Against Sirleaf
By Calvin Brooks
MONROVIA, August 18 (LINA) -The National Elections Commission (NCE) has dismissed the claim of dual citizenship filed against Montserrado County senatorial aspirant Robert Sirleaf by the Coalition for the Transformation of Liberia.
According to the NEC’s Communication and Outreach Director, Joey T. Kennedy, the hearing officer of NEC, Atty. Muana Ville, has ruled that the institution is not a legal entity and does not have the legal right to challenge the citizenship of Mr. Sirleaf.
Kennedy made the disclosure Monday in an interview with journalists concerning the preliminary listing of aspirants for the pending Special Senatorial Election for which the Commission is seeking approval for postponement from the Legislature due to the Ebola virus crisis in the country.
He indicated that Atty Ville ruled that the Coalition for Transformation of Liberia does not have the legal standing to question the nationality of Sirleaf and seek to bar him from contesting the elections because he is allegedly not a Liberian citizen.
He emphasized that the Commission has already notified Mr. Sirleaf that he is one of the candidates for the pending Special Senatorial Election, adding that the Commission is still hearing other cases filed against some aspirants in the elections.
