Price Control Gains Momentum In Bong County

By Ballah Kollie, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, August 17 (LINA) - The Commerce Ministry Regional Coordinator for Bong, Nimba and Lofa counties, Mr. John Y. Kuoh, says he has scored “significant success” in controlling of prices in Bong County.

He said prior to the price control exercise, major businesses, including leading fuel dealers, were taking advantage of the Ebola scare to exploit citizens by unilaterally hiking prices.

Mr Kuoh told the Liberia News Agency that the price control measures targeted mainly the rice and fuel sellers as well as money exchangers.

He said during the exercise, which started on Monday August 11, his team seized monies from businesses that were exchanging one United States dollar for between 90 and 91 Liberian dollars, instead of the Central Bank approved rate of L$83 to one US dollar.

“It will surprise you to note that we even seized four cartoons of rotten fish from marketers and a cold storage operator all of which we disposed of in consultation with a representative of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),”  Kuoh to the Liberia News Agency at the weekend.

He warned citizens against eating outdated food and urged business people to “be their brothers’ keepers and avoid exploiting them.”

The Government of Liberia Thursday declared the practice of arbitrary price hike an economic crime punishable under the law,
