ZWEDRU CITY, August 15 (LINA) -The Presiding Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit Court in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, George S. Wiles, has stressed the need to decongest overcrowded prisons in the county in the wake of the Ebola epidemic.

Delivering his charge at the official opening of the Court for the August Term recently, Judge Wiles stressed that the prevailing situation demands speedy disposal of cases, noting that one way was to screen the cases of pre-trial detainees to dispose of them where legally expedient.

There are seven criminal and 19 civil cases on the court’s docket for the August Term.

Responding to the judge’s charge, County Attorney Adolphus Karnuah assured the prosecution’s fullest cooperation in ensuring that petit cases are carefully screened with charges dropped where necessary.

Also making remarks were the Chairman of the Local Bar Association, Cllr. David Gbala, UNMIL Judicial Monitor and a representative from the civil society, all of whom promised to support the court as it renders transparent justice.

Meanwhile, the Resident Judge earlier announced the filing of vacancies at the 7th Judicial Circuit.

Judge Wiles announced that the Chief Justice had appointed nine associate magistrates to fill vacancies recently created in the circuit either by death or pension.

Also appointed were clerks of court at the circuit and magisterial levels.

Six stipendiary and associate magistrates were pensioned by Government about a year ago, while three others died.

He, however, did not name those appointed.
