KAKATA, August 14 (LINA) - In an effort to decongest prison facilities in Margibi County in the wake of the Ebola outbreak, the office of the County Attorney has released 15 prisoners from further detention.
Speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency in Kakata recently, Acting County Attorney Isaac Liverpool George said the action followed a meeting with justice actors in the country.
He explained that freeing of the detainees was based upon the directive of the Chief Justice of Supreme Court.
Atty. George said those released over the weekend were individuals who committed minor offenses, including aggravated assault and theft of property.
He said the action is intended to protect inmates at prison facilities from contracting the Ebola virus, though no case has been reported from any prison in the county.
He disclosed that his office will shortly release additional prisoners who, according to him, “do not pose much threat to society”.
