Sime Darby Contributes US$157K For Ebola Awareness

By Prince Nagbe

MONROVIA, August 4 (LINA) - The Sime Darby Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sime Darby oil palm company, has contributed US$157, 220 to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) for Ebola awareness programs and campaigns in Liberia.

IFRC is working in collaboration with the Liberian National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) to control the spread of the disease and reduce mortality and other illnesses related to the Ebola disease, which has claimed the lives of more than 600 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Sime Darby Public Relations Director David Kolleh made the disclosure in an interview with the Liberia News Agency in Monrovia over the weekend.

According to Kolleh, key activities expected to be carried out include training and mobilization of volunteers in affected communities as well as providing psychosocial support to help those affected continue with their lives.

Kolleh said other activities include setting up diagnosis facilities, expanding ongoing awareness programs to Sime Darby facilities as well as developing a system to manage any outbreak of the Ebola disease.

He noted that IFRC and LNRCS will also educate people on how the virus is transmitted in a bid to dispel rumors and misconceptions on the mode of transmission.

Kolleh told LINA that the awareness program will last for eight months and is expected to reach approximately 1.5 million people in the country.

Sime Darby Plantation Liberia (SDPL), which currently has a workforce of almost 3,000, is a multi-million dollar oil palm company which signed a 63-year concession agreement with the Government of Liberia to develop over 220,000 hectares of land into oil palm plantations in Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, Gbarpolu and Bong counties.
