By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe

MONROVIA, Jan. 16 (LINA) -The Management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has disclosed that it connected 6,777 new customers in the Liberian capital, Monrovia and its environs in 2013.

LEC Chief Executive Officer Gregory Sylvestre said the corporation connected 547 customers in June, 680 in July, 681 in August and 1, 346 customers in September 2013.

According to Mr. Sylvestre, the LEC also connected 1,102 customers in October; 1, 403 in November and 1, 018 in December 2013.

He made the disclosure Wednesday when LEC Management and Board of Directors appeared before the Senate Statutory Committee on Lands, Mines, Energy and Environment, to provide information about its achievements and challenges in 2013.

Meanwhile, Sylvestre has disclosed that LEC plans to connect 2,050 new customers between January and June 2014 in Monrovia and surrounding areas, in line with its mandate to provide citizens access to electricity by connecting them to the national grid.

He also assured that the Corporation is committed to improving its operations, including reducing losses occasioned by theft.

He put the current losses of LEC at about 26 percent, with eight percent of that being technical shortfall, noting that LEC currently loses 18 percent of its generation to power theft and that reducing the loss will allow the corporation to provide better services at lower rates to customers.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sylvester has disclosed that the LEC recently opened a Customer Contract Center as part of efforts to improve its customer relations and to track requests for service and act on them more efficiently.

He said the management is also working on establishing maintenance and asset management systems to safeguard Corporate Assets as well as improve corporate security.
