MOE Official Warns Teachers Against Rape
By Calvin Brooks
MONROVIA, July 24 (LINA) –The Deputy Minister for Instruction at the Ministry of Education, Hawa Goll Kotchi, has warned Liberian teachers against rape on school campuses.
Minster Kotchi warned that any teacher who engages in rape on school campuses should consider himself dismissed; his teaching certificate revoked and barred from the teaching profession in Liberia.
The Deputy Education Boss sounded the warning Wednesday at a program marking the launch of the Safe Cities for Women Campaign in Liberia held at the University of Liberia Auditorium on Capitol Hill.
She urged students to report any teacher or administrator who makes advances at them in their various school campuses, noting that there are schools in remote parts of the country where teachers harass students.
In remarks at the occasion, the Country Director of ActionAid Liberia, Korto Williams, said gender-based violence and rape are becoming prevalent in Liberia, and stressed the need to put measures in place to curtail this ugly act.
Madam Williams observed that the campaign for safe cities for women will enhance the ongoing awareness on rape and gender based violence against young women and girls in the society.
