Pres. Sirleaf Calls For Robust Response To End Ebola

MONROVIA, July 22 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called for robust national response to end the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) menace that has plagued the country since March this year.

She said Liberians need to help eradicate the virus; otherwise the disease will prevent the country from achieving its full potential.

 President Sirleaf told her compatriots that “Ebola is real” and urged them to “Go out and carry the message wherever you are, at home, workplace and school about the dangers of Ebola and ways to prevent it.”

According to an presidential press release, the Liberian leader spoke Tuesday at the Ministry of Health during a visit to obtain first hand update on the deadly disease.

President Sirleaf also called on security personnel in various communities to compel sick people to seek medical attention as a way of combating the Ebola virus.

The Liberian leader said no family members are allowed to bury dead relatives without the knowledge of health authorities anywhere in the country.

She said government has provided US$500,000 to fight the deadly Ebola virus.

Also making remarks at the Ministry of Health program was the head of UNMIL, Karin Landgren, who said her organization is collaborating with the government and partners to address the Ebola disease in Liberia.

She said the UNMIL medical team works with the Ministry of Health at Ebola isolation clinics.

Madam Landgren said UNMIL is also supporting efforts by partners, including the World Health Organization and Medicins Sans Frontiers, in managing the caseload.
