BUCHANAN, July 17 (LINA) - The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Grand Bassa detachment has arrested several drug dealers and users in Buchanan City and its environs in Grand Bassa County.

The arrests were made on Tuesday with the collaboration of the five Magisterial Courts in Grand Bassa County which issued the search and seizure permits.

According to the DEA Grand Bassa County detachment Commander, Major Joseph Taggedine, the swoop was nicknamed “Operation Sweeping Wave”.

He said it was aimed at cleaning up the five electoral districts of Grand Bassa County of narcotics and other banned substances during and after the July 26 Independence Day celebrations.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in an interview on Wednesday, Major Taggedine said 11 persons were rounded up during the exercise.

He said those arrested included Charles Dickinson, 22, George Swaye, 17, Mamie Vondeh, 40, Joseph Saykon, 55, Isaac Brown, Abraham Yeezee, 38, Levi Dayugar, 31, Mary Kamu, 27, as well as Morris Keita and Edward Geezee, 38, among others.

He said among the 11persons arrested, four are drug dealers and seven are drug users, while the substances arrested are worth L$35,000 at street value.

Major Taggedine said 10kg of marijuana and five gallons of local alcohol (cane juice) mixed with marijuana, which is commonly referred to as “down stairs”, were confiscated from the dealers.

He said those arrested have been forwarded to the Buchanan Magisterial Court for prosecution, and promised to ensure that Grand Bassa is drug free in the coming months.
