Senator wants “State Of Emergency” Over Ebola Virus

Winnie T. Dixon

MONROVIA, July 8 (LINA)  - Maryland Senator H. Dan Morias has underscored the need for a “state of emergency” to be declared to enhance the fight against Ebola.

He made the statement on Tuesday, July 8, during the regular session of the Liberian Senate when the issue of an update on the disease in the country was put forth for discussions.

Morias said it was baffling that citizens would not adhere to safety nets such as avoiding handshakes, washing of hands and eating well prepared food, amongst others, to help contain and eradicate the virus from the country.

The Senator said the essence of the emergency period would be to quarantine residents of the Red Light to Paynesville to the Gabriel Johnson Tucker Bridge areas and conduct a house-to-house visitation in search of those with the disease who are in hiding.

The Maryland lawmaker said Liberians cannot continue to live in a state of denial of the deadly Ebola disease, with almost every case in hospitals being reported as Ebola-related.

According to the Senator, the World Health Organization has declared Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone as “out of control zone” for the deadly Ebola disease.

He said his call is not to infringe on the rights of people to free movement, but is in line with Article 86 and 87 of the Liberian Constitution of 1986.

Article 86 gives the President the right, in consultation with the National Legislature, to institute a ‘state of emergency’ when there is a national stress in the country.
