Nimba Lawmaker Condemns Vandalism At ArcelorMittal

By Prince Nagbe

YEKEPA, July 6 (LINA) - Nimba County District # 9Representative and Co-chair of the Nimba Legislative Caucus, Matenokay Tingban, has condemned the recent acts of vandalism and mayhem perpetrated against ArcelorMittal by some youths of the county.

Representative Tingban said the Nimba Legislative Caucus and the people of Nimba will work in collaboration with the government in making sure that those involved in the act face the full weight of the law.

The Nimba County lawmaker made the statement Saturday when he and other officials of government held talks with the Management of ArcelorMittal on the recent rampage and vandalism that took place at the company’s production plant in Yekepa, Nimba County.

According to Representative Tingban, after experiencing more than 14 years of devastating civil conflict, Liberians have resolved to live in peace with one another and as such, no acts of lawlessness will be condoned by the people.

He said the Legislative Caucus has been directly involved in the various negotiations between the company and the people of Nimba County and that ArcelorMittal is gradually addressing issues raised atthese meetings.

“To see such unwholesome act being meted out against the company by some citizens of Nimba, beats the imagination of the caucus,” Representative Tingban said.

He compared ArcelorMittal to LAMCO, the former operator of the mines, saying “ArcelorMittal is doing extremely well because the company paid for crops as well as mining claims and is also giving to the county an annual social development fund as part of its corporate social responsibility.”

“LAMCO did not do all of these things when they operated in Nimba years back,” he observed.

He said the Caucus will not tolerate any acts of vandalism and mayhem not only against the ArcelorMittal family but also against the peaceful citizens of Nimba, and that it is working with the county administration, central government and the Liberia National Police (LNP) in making sure that what happened is not repeated.

He assured the Management of Arcelor Mittal that the Caucus is in full compliance with any action that will be taken against those individuals involved in keeping with the laws of Liberia, adding, “We are not going to allow anybody to give a black face of our county”.
