NHA, AfDB Sign US$36K Accord
By Robert Dixon

MONROVIA, June 29 (LINA) -The African Development Bank (AfDB)  and the National Housing Authority (NHA) have signed a Protocol Agreement valued at US$360,000 to provide capacity-building and technical assistance to the NHA.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the Bank’s Country Office in Monrovia Friday, AfDB Country head, Dr. Margret Kilo, said the Bank will act as the administrator of the National Technical Cooperation Fund (NTCF) pursuant to an agreement signed on April 5, 2004 between the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the AfDB.

Dr. Kilo said the objective of the NTCF is to promote African solidarity, regional integration, technical advancement and economic independence through increased capacity building and institutional support initiatives for the Bank’s regional member countries.

She called on other well-meaning institutions to support the NHA in building its capacity to meet Liberia’s critical housing needs.

In remarks at the ceremony, NHA Managing Director Samuel W. Thomson thanked the AfDB for its level of support to Liberia and recounted several major
interventions of the bank in the areas of power, water and roads.

He said capacity building is critical to a country coming from war, adding that support of the NTCF and the AfDB to the NHA in this area is strategic.

Mr. Thomson said the support was a critical milestone in developing technocrats, support staff and equipping the NHA in its ongoing housing policy reforms to foster growth of the Liberian housing sector.

Thomson stressed that local and international training of staff will place the entity in a better position to meet current housing challenges and in developing innovative products, proper financial reporting, timely response and ensuring value for money.
