ZWEDRU CITY, June 19 (LINA) - The trial jury at the 7th Judicial Circuit Court in Zwedru has brought down a not guilty verdict in the case involving an accused rapist.
The accused identified as Washington Saydee,52, was facing trial for allegedly raping his 15-yeaqr-old step daughter.
He was immediately set free following Presiding Judge S. Geevon Smith’s concurrence with the 12-man empanelled jury’s unanimous verdict of lack of sufficient evidence to convict the accused.
The not guilty verdict was preceded by Judge Smith’s charge to the men and women serving on the jury panel to put right first to where it belongs without fear or favor.
Mr. Saydee, it can be recalled, was arrested in March this year by the Liberia National Police at the PTP Refugee Camp where he served as a security guard for allegedly raping his 15-year-old step daughter Mercy Weah, who is now five months pregnant.
He was subsequently ordered detained following preliminary hearing and indicted by the grand jury in March.
He was in pre-trial detention at the National Palace of Correction in Zwedru awaiting court trial.
