FDA Official Warns Against Hunting In Forest Reserves
By D. Ignatius Roberts, LINA Grand Cape Mount Correspondent

ROBERTSPORT, June 14 (LINA) - An official of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) in Grand Cape Mount County has advised hunters to desist from hunting in forest reserves to protect endangered species.

Steve Miapeh, the Chief Park Warden at the FDA’s Lake Piso Multiple Use Reserve (LPMUR) told the Liberia News Agency that there are not only national, but also international laws that prohibit hunting animals in reserved areas.

He said the preservation of forests by Government is intended to safeguard endangered species in accordance with international standards and laws, adding that setting traps or hunting in those areas “is a complete violation of those very laws and rules.”

Meanwhile, according to Miapeh, the FDA has formulated a five-year strategic plan to promote the preservation of forests in the country.

He said under the plan, FDA will conduct series of awareness workshops and seminars on how citizens can provide security for the reserved forests.

He said the plan provides for the teaching of citizens on how to control pollution of rivers and creeks in the controlled areas where companies are operating.

Miapeh said currently, the citizens of Tolsor and other towns and villages in Grand Cape Mount County have already formed forest management committees to sustain their forest.
