Agric Minister Nudges Liberians To Farm

MONROVIA, Jan 12 (LINA) – Agriculture Minister Dr. Florence A. Chenoweth has reiterated her call on Liberians to invest in the soil and grow more food to make the nation self-sufficient in food production.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Minister Chenoweth made the call Friday in the Township of Gardnerville during the symbolic harvest of vegetable crops, including cabbage, grown in the compound of the Agriculture Ministry in the township.

At this first harvest, employees of the ministry were afforded the opportunity to purchase cabbage of various varieties.

Speaking at the start of the harvest, Minister Chenoweth expressed satisfaction over the process, and promised that the Ministry of Agriculture staff will not just grow flowers, but rather more vegetable crops.

She said the Ministry will continue to provide support to famers in the form of farming equipment and other inputs to enable them grow more food and help boost food security in the country.

Minister Chenoweth disclosed that the Ministry’s policy to empower women famers and also support local farmers to become self-sufficient in food production will be enforced in 2014.
