Senator Taylor Clarifies US$7m Claim
By Ballah Kollie, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, June 13 (LINA) – In the wake of an allegation that Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor has denied Bong County of receiving US$7million, the Senator has refuted any wrongdoing, claiming that the decision was that of the Liberian Senate.

Jorquelleh District Number Two Representative Prince K. Moye recently told citizens that the Senator denied the county of the money due to the Liberian Senate's refusal to concur with the lower House on the inclusion of US$73million in the National Budget for district development.

But Senator Taylor told the Liberia News Agency on Wednesday that lawmakers need to face the reality of persistent shortfall in the National Budget and avoid deceiving citizens that a budget which experienced nearly US$50 million shortfall could raise US$73 million to support district development.

She noted it was also impossible for an individual Senator to overturn the decision of the majority, and therefore called on Representative Moye to refrain from his negative campaign against her.

Meanwhile, Senator Taylor has said she will lobby to ensure reduction in the cost of credits per course at the Bong County Technical College from US$8.00 to US$5.00.

She said the decision is based on increment in the college's allotment in the National Budget, noting, “Allotments are intended to reduce fees and that we must ensure as leaders of the county.”

In a related development, Senator Taylor has recommended the technical intervention of the Ministry of Public Works in assessing the quality of work done by the contractor building the college that has cost some US$4million of the county and social development funds, while the project remains incomplete.
