Tubmanburg Mayor Yearns For Funding
By David Seedee, LINA Bomi County Correspondent
TUBMANBURG, June 7 (LINA) - The Acting City Mayor of Tubmanburg, Rebecca Benson, says the lack of budgetary support from the county administration is impeding the operations of the Tubmanburg City Corporation.
Madam Benson pointed out that in the absence of funding for the City Corporation of Tubmanburg, it would be “very difficult to upkeep the city.”
Speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency in Tubmanburg recently, Madam Benson said there is also no regular appropriation in the County and Social Development funds for the city, the provincial capital of Bomi County.
She said waterways and swamps in the city are flooded during the rainy season because there is no funding to hire youths to clean the main waterways and drainages.
Madam Benson said water and sanitation are major challenges the city continues to face during both the rainy and the dry seasons.
She said the Bomi County Legislative Caucus and the County Administration allotted US$20,000 for the city corporation in the 2014 County and Social Development Funds, but this amount is yet to be made available.
The City Mayor is meanwhile appealing to the County Legislative Caucus and the County Administration to fast track the decision reached at the County Council Sitting in Klay early this year to provide funding for the city corporation.
The Chairman of the Caucus, Senator Lahai Lassana, who spoke on behalf of the Caucus at the time, said the amount is intended to develop and keep Tubmanburg clean as the capital City of Bomi County.
