Senator Wants US$200k To Upgrade Cestos High

Winnie T. Dixon, Intern

MONROVIA, May 30 (LINA) - Rivercess County Senator J. Jonathan Banney has requested the Liberian Senate to allocate US$200,000 in the 2014/2015 fiscal budget to renovate the Cestos High School in Cestos City, Rivercess County

In a letter dated May 28 and read in Plenary Thursday, Senator Banney said his request is based on the fact that the institution, the only senior high school in the county, lacks quality infrastructure and other facilities.

He expressed fear that the poor learning environment at the only high school could reduce the chances of students entering high school.

Rivercess County has a population of just over 71, 000, according to the 2008 census, and like majority of the counties of Liberia, has a literacy rate of below 50 percent.

Students in senior high school in the county number less than 200, one report says.

Meanwhile, the communication has been sent to the Committee on Ways, Means and Finance to advise plenary for appropriate action.
