Senator Johnson Condemns AFL Widows
By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe

MONROVIA, May 29(LINA) -The Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on National Defense, Prince Johnson, has condemned widows of former Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) soldiers for stripping themselves on the grounds of the Capital Building.

Senator Johnson described the act as “a disgrace to womanhood and the cultural values” of the country, and warned the widows not to repeat same.

According to the Liberia News Agency, the Senate Defense Committee Chairman made the statement Thursday in Session when he was requested by Plenary to provide an update on the status of the former AFL soldiers’ widows.

It can be recalled that several women claiming to be widows of former soldiers of the AFL on Tuesday, May 27, stripped naked on the premises of the National Legislature during a protest in demand of the benefits of their late husbands.

Johnson noted that so much money has already be given the women without knowing their actual numbers, adding that the more government gives money, the more widows develop overnight, making it difficult to remedy the situation.

He disclosed that the Ministry of National Defense is in the process of preparing a comprehensive data of the widows to enable government address the matter, stressing that some of the women involved are not widows.

Johnson has, meanwhile, called on the women to remain calm, as frantic efforts are being made by the government to put the matter to rest.
