Ex-Lawmaker Urges More Police, Gender Ministry Budget

MONROVIA, May 29 (LINA) – A former Montserrado County lawmaker, Richard Holder, has called on the Legislature to increase the 2014/2015 budgetary allocations of the Ministry of Gender and Development and the Liberia National Police.

He observed that increment in the budgets of the two government agencies will enable them intensify the fight against rape.

Holder made the assertion on Wednesday at a one-day event organized by the Gender Ministry, UNICEF and partners as part of the End Violence Against Children (EVAC) initiative.

The former Todee and Careysburg lawmaker noted that while UNICEF has seen the need to increase awareness against rape, structures that respond to the act will only become effective when fully funded by the Government.

Holder called on every citizen to consider rape as a public enemy and report any incident of the crime.

Also speaking at the event, UNICEF Country Representative Sheldon Yett asked community members to see themselves as key players in the fight against rape.

He said acts of rape occur in communities, noting that if the community members are united and consistent in taking actions against it, the practice would be minimized.

For his part, the Deputy Gender Minister Andrew Tehmeh, lauded UNICEF’s contribution to the Ministry’s efforts to protect the rights of Liberian children, and pledged the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that Liberian children fully enjoy their rights.
