NIAO Elders Plead For 11 Mob Violence Suspects
By Chris Nyenapee, LINA Grand Gedeh County Correspondent
ZWEDRU CITY, May 26 (LINA) - Elders of Niao Clan, Niao Gorbo Chiefdom in Cavalla District have pleaded with Grand Gedeh Superintendent Peter Solo to free 11 citizens of the area currently behind bars on mob violence charges.
The elders, through their Zwedru Community chairman James Barzon, in a petition admitted that their children were guilty of carrying out mob violence against one E. Zeue Bloe in Niao Janzon about a month ago for alleged witchcraft following the death of their friend.
They used the coffin of the dead man to chase the victim under the pretext that it was the deceased’s spirit that was leading them.
As though this was not enough, they stoned and beat up the victim, prompting police intervention to put the situation under control.
The eleven, who are said to be community leaders, were subsequently arrested by the police, screened, charged and arraigned before the Zwedru Magisterial Court and sent to jail awaiting indictment at the 7th Judicial Circuit Court.
Superintendent Solo, who received the petition in the presence of local officials, including CEO Harrison Darwolor, acting County Attorney Joseph Pyne and others recently, thanked the elders for being realistic about the crime and error committed by their children.
He appealed to the elders to exercise patience as he consults and confers with his legal and traditional councils and the victim for an amicable resolution of the matter.
