Rubber Planters Call For Budgetary Allotment

By Ballah Kollie, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, May 26 (LINA) – The National Rubber Planters Association of Liberia has ended its 4th National Congress with a call for the association to be included in the national budget.

The newly-elected vice president Wilhemina G. Mulbah observed that including the association in the national budget will enable its members to increase their production.

She observed that many rubber farmers want to increase their production but lack the financial capacity to do so.

Mulbah told the Liberia News Agency Saturday following the close of the congress in Gbarnga that her ascendancy to the leadership of the organization paves the way for the voices of “lay or smallholder farmers” to be heard.

This year’s annual event was held under the theme: “Our rubber, our future,” and brought together a cross-section of rubber farmers from around the country.

She indicated that gone are the days when the leadership of the association were elites who did not open up their activities to members.

Also speaking to LINA, the elected treasurer, Carlos Wallace Smith, promised to ensure the safety of the association’s funding.

Smith, who also serves as the Government of Liberia External Relations Manager to Firestone Liberia, attributed the reduction in the price of rubber to the increase in the supply of the commodity, caused by many farmers abandoning other forms of farming for rubber.

The National Rubber Planters Association of Liberia Inc. is an advocacy group that speaks for the well-being of rubber farmers.
