Transport Union Raises Monrovia-Robertsport Fare
By D. Ignatius Roberts, LINA Cape Mount Correspondent

ROBERTSPORT, May 23 (LINA) - An official the Federation of Transport Unions of Liberia (FTUL) Grand Cape Mount County branch has disclosed that the transport fare from Robertsport to Monrovia has been increased by 25 percent.

FTUL Assistant Advisor Myers Kiandolo said the transport fare was adjusted upwards from L$400 to L$500.

He told the Liberia News Agency in Robertsport that the union reached the decision to increase the fares because the cost of a gallon of gasoline has increased from L$390 to L$435 in Robertsport.

According to Kiandolo, besides the gasoline, the road leading from Robertsport to the Township of Madina in Garwula District is in deplorable condition.

He said if the road is not rehabilitated ahead of the rainy season, no commercial vehicles will ply the route or passengers will be required to pay more than L$1,000.

The transport union official said Superintendent Imam Mohammed A. Paasewe recently held a discussion with union officials and appealed for an adjustment in the fares in the interest of the people.

But Kiandolo said executives of the union in the county are expected to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the Superintendent’s appeal.
