CRC Plans to Resuscitate Harper Port
By Prince Nagbe

CAVALLA, May 1(LINA) - The Management of the Cavalla Rubber Company (CRC) in Maryland County is holding discussions with authorities of the
National Port Authority (NPA) to rehabilitate the Port of Harper into a modernized and standardized functioning facility.

CRC Deputy Managing Director John Barkemeni made the disclosure during a visit by Information Minister Lewis Brown to the concession area as part of a five-county assessment tour of major development projects in rural Liberia.

According to Mr. Barkemeni, CRC management plans to use the port to ship its rubber products and palm oil produced by its sister company, Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP).

He told Minister Brown  that the rehabilitation of the Harper Port will not only help the company ship its products, but will also boost the economy of the county and create job opportunities for the young people.

Barkemeni said his company’s decision to reconstruct the Port of Harper stems from management’s conviction that refurbishing the Port of Harper will ease the shipment burden confronting the company over the years.

He told Minister Brown that CRC is presently shipping its rubber through the Ivorian border town of Pololo in San Pedro, due to the lack of a port as the Harper Port is in a bad state.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Maryland County Legislative Caucus, Senator H. Dan Morias, has said the rehabilitation of the Harper Port is of “great concern” to the people of Maryland, noting, “The Caucus has started negotiations with major stakeholders, including the CRC, to help resuscitate the port of Harper.”
