Health Minister Says Gov’t Committed To Malaria Battle

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, April 28 (LINA) - Health Minister Dr. Walter T. Gwenigale has assured Liberians and partners that the Government remains committed to the fight against malaria.

Dr. Gwenigale noted, however, that eradicating malaria requires the collective efforts of every Liberian and the nation’s partners, adding, “It takes the commitment of all to ensure that the fight against malaria continues in every part of the country.”

The Health Minister was contained in a statement read on his behalf by the deputy chief medical officer Tolbert Nyenswah over the weekend at programs marking World Malaria Day held at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.

He indicated that to eradicate malaria will require at least one percent of the nation’s GDP or 50 percent of health care spending, and hoped that this will attract the attention of government and its international partners.

He pointed out that malaria is a disease that needs actual attention and support to be eradicated from Liberia as it is part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
