Opposition Senator Lauds Gov’t Press Freedom Policy

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, April 27 (LINA) - Montserrado County Senator Joyce Freeman-Sumo has lauded the Unity Party (UP) Government for upholding and promoting press freedom in Liberia.

Senator Sumo, who is a member of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change, observed that the Government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has not mistreated journalists compared to previous governments, which were noted for harassing and intimidating journalists.

The Montserrado County Senator made the commendation over the weekend at programs marking the 25th Anniversary of The NEWS Newspaper held at the Monrovia City Hall.

She noted that in the past, Liberian journalists were arrested and jailed for their reportage on certain events in the country, but noted that this was not the case with the UP government.

She observed that the government of President Sirleaf has been able to promote and enhance press freedom over the past eight years.

Senator Sumo also commended The NEWS Newspaper for its factual and objective reporting over the past 25 years of its existence, noting that it is one of the most respected newspapers within the Liberian media landscape.
