Residents Blow Alarm About Drug Addicts

By Johnson Liway, LINA Grand Bassa Correspondent

BUCHANAN, April 12 (LINA) - Residents of Buchanan are calling on the Liberia National Police to move into the former Liberia Water and Sewer Compound in Lower Harlandsville in Buchanan to prevent it from being transformed into a drug den and criminal hideout.

The residents said the area has been overtaken by drug dealers, users and criminals.

Speaking to Radio Gbehzohn during the week, residents of the community said if nothing is done by the county administration and relevant agencies to curb drug usage in the area, it would engulf the entire city with adverse consequences for the youth.

One interviewee, Cecelia Noah, a resident of the Harlandsville community, said the criminals are also throwing feces around the community, especially in the LWSC compound, and that when confronted the criminals react by threatening the residents.

She is therefore calling on the Liberia National Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to conduct constant patrols in that community to prevent the drug users from making the area their preserve.

Meanwhile, DEA commander in Grand Bassa County, Major Joseph Taggedline says a team of DEA officers have visited the area based on a tip-off of some residents.

He told the Liberia News Agency that upon arrival at the deserted Flour Mill compound, most of the drug addicts had left the area, but one notorious drug dealer was arrested and is undergoing interrogation.
